This lovely antique dictionary stand was originally designed by L.W. Noyes, of Iowa, for Chicago firm Giffen & Giffen and was designed to display heavy or thick books, usually dictionaries, religious texts, or other large reference materials. The stand is adjustable: Its oak panels move up and down on the cast-iron base and can be tilted back or forward so the text sits at an ideal angle.
